Transitioning your ‘before’ wardrobe into your ‘after’ wardrobe can be tricky. You don’t want to be spending a fortune on new clothes when you lose weight fast, but you can’t carry on walking around in jeans that slip down your bottom with every step you take and tops and dresses that swamp your shrinking frame either. Also, you’re probably going to want to save money for that inevitable shopping spree and complete wardrobe overhaul that will be required when you reach your target…

Buy basics

If you get yourself a few basics that fit well every time you jump a dress size you can be looking and feeling great without breaking the bank. A great pair of jeans, a nice shirt or blouse and a cute dress should carry you through to the next dress size bracket, buy things that you feel great in now. You could consider these purchases as rewards for hitting each milestone, slipping into the next size down will be a great motivator.

Stretchy fabrics

Now is the time to abandon lose fitting, flowy clothes, you might have sworn by these cuts in the past, but they’ll start looking like they’re drowning you as your new shape emerges. Stretchy fabrics are perfect while you’re on your weight loss journey, you’ll get much more longevity from each piece meaning you have to restock your wardrobe less. Stretchy tops, skirts and dresses will shrink with you and see you through a couple of dress size losses.

Belt it up

If you’re struggling to part with the flowy and the oversized clothing mentioned above, fear not, you can still make these items work while you transition through the sizes. Treating yourself to a couple of belts means that you can cinch your narrowing waist and show off your new figure, making those clothes you owned before last a little longer until you’re ready to move on.


Fashion changes fast, the high street and fashion magazines tell you that you need to own the latest trend, and then it tells you what you just bought is old news weeks later. Save yourself from the pitfalls of trend hopping by treating yourself to some new accessories instead. Your basics should carry you through (because classics never go out of style) and adding some fun new accessories will bring your look up to date without the need to re-mortgage every season.

Underneath it all

It might be a good idea to make friends in your local underwear store bra fitting department because you should be paying them a visit with every dress size lost too. The difference a good fitting bra can make to your posture and overall shape is huge, you could look like you’ve dropped another 10lbs. Again, don’t keep splurging on Victoria’s Secret, a couple of basic bras each time your size changes will see you through until goal weight.
