“I’ve always been big… the fat friend, the fat sister. For as long as I can remember I’ve felt like I stand out because of my weight.

“When I met my husband Neil in 1999, I weighed 17 stone and he didn’t seem to care! We fell in love quickly and then fell in love with drinking and eating out together. We married in 2010 (I lost some weight but quickly piled it back on) and four years later I fell pregnant with our son Ted. We were overjoyed.

“I went to meet the midwife with excitement but my joy turned to horror as she informed me I was morbidly obese and classed as a high risk pregnancy. I needed to be under consultant care and risked gestational diabetes and a potentially tough birth. Worse still, I wasn’t allowed the water birth I’d always dreamed of. My pregnancy passed in a miserable blur and no-one realised I was pregnant until I was six months gone because of my size. I also felt guilty for being high risk. I was a helpless mother and my baby wasn’t even born.

“Ted was born via C-section at a healthy 8lb 14oz. Despite our obvious joy, I couldn’t shake off the misery. My wound didn’t heal (I now realise that was due to my size) and I couldn’t bend easily to take care of Ted. I tried some mother and baby groups but felt so conspicuous and out of place. They all looked like yummy mummies to me.

“I’d tried Cambridge Weight Plan before but wasn’t in the right frame of mind. This time I was determined and got back in touch with my Consultant, who told me I had to be three months post birth and not breastfeeding. At almost three months to the day, I arranged to meet her.

“I followed the Plan to the letter. I knew it worked and I knew that I needed to be a healthy mum for Ted. I’ve now lost more than 9st and regained a confidence that I didn’t know I had. Ted has a healthy mum at last and my guilt has gone. I’m proud at mother and baby groups now and I feel as though I fit in. I am a yummy mummy! Cambridge Weight Plan has changed my family life for good.”
