The summer holidays are soon to be a distant memory, but don’t put your case back into the loft just yet! Why not look into a little trip a bit nearer to home? The UK has plenty of fab destinations that are worth a weekend away, here are a few of our faves…
One of the most diverse and vibrant cities in the world, tourists flock from the world over to visit our fair capital, and for some of us it’s practically on our door step. The city has so much to offer no matter what your tastes. Galleries a plenty for culture vultures, monuments for history fanatics, museums for those who want to learn a little on their trip, not to mention the shopping. Every high street shop you can think of and all the designer boutiques in the West End on Oxford Street, Regent Street and Bond Street. For those with more eclectic tastes, you can join the punks and catch some bands in Camden. Or if you fancy getting ahead of the latest trends, visit London’s thriving East End, Shoreditch, Brick Lane and Dalston for quirky independent shops and restaurants.
Why not catch a show while in town? London has one of the best theatre scenes in the world, rivalled only by New York’s Broadway. Try and grab a deal on a grand musical show or maybe join the queues for the latest Harry Potter instalment, The Cursed Child now showing in London.
There’s more to Edinburgh than The Fringe Festival, it’s another city steeped in culture and exciting things to do. Why not climb to the top of Arthur’s Seat for a real sense of achievement, and stunning views over Scotland’s capital.
Edinburgh Castle is an unmissable feature that sits high overlooking the city below. Another shopper’s paradise you won’t be disappointed (though your bank manager may be) by your visit to Edinburgh. Being such an old city this would be a great place to book yourself onto a ghost tour (there are several operating in the city) and hear all about the streets and secrets and things that go bump in the night.
Beautiful and a little more relaxed than our other recommendations, Cambridge is the ideal location for a more chilled weekend away in the UK. Take a stroll through the stunning city and visit the awe inspiring university buildings and grounds, where some of the country’s greatest minds have been educated.
Taking a punt down the river is the number one tourist attraction in the city, and there are also many museums to rival those in London. Walking tours are a popular activity too if you wanted to learn some history about this lovely English city.
One for the music mad. Liverpool, the home of the world famous Beatles, has many themed attractions honouring the fab four. Visit The Beatles Experience, which details the band’s rise to the top, fascinating whether you’re a fan or not and super nostalgic for those who can remember their chart topping days. Next up, a visit to the Cavern Club (not the original, they moved it a little down the street), where you can catch an amazing tribute act and pretend you really were there 50 years ago!
There’s also the breathtaking Liverpool Cathedral which is definitely worth a visit, the tower experience takes you 500ft above sea level (and 108 steps!) with amazing 360 degree views of the city, apparently you can see all the way to Blackpool tower on a clear day! Also worth a visit before your trip is done is the Albert Dock, full of restaurants and bars, it’s a great place to sit out by the water and chill, soaking up the atmosphere.
