The dreary weather of February can make this time of year feel a little bleak, but there’s a spring-like light at the end of the tunnel. It’s only 6 weeks until the first day of spring, soon the flowers will bloom and lambs will be hopping about the fields, welcoming in a fresh wave of warmer weather and longer days.
However we feel like there are ways we can make more of the wintery days however. The Danes have a concept called ‘hygge’ (pronounced ‘hoog-ah’) which roughly translates to mean a feeling of cosiness and security, but really there is so much more to it than that. We’ve pulled together a mini how-to-hygge guide for you below so you can embrace these last weeks of winter…
Hygge at home
One of the easiest ways to welcome hygge into your life is in your home. Blankets, pillows, throws, candles, fires and soft lighting will bring the Danish cosy feelings into your home. Fresh bedding, new pyjamas, knitted socks, and watching your favourite film while wrapped in a blanket, sipping on a warm drink are all super ‘hyggelig’. Enjoying all these things when you’re safe and warm indoors and the weather outside is frightful is especially hygge.
Hygge your clothes
When you’re out and about and it’s freezing cold you want to be wearing comfy and snuggly clothes. Invest in hats, scarves and gloves in fabrics that feel luxurious to you, and above all, keep you toasty and warm! Dressing like this and going for a long wintery walk, when there’s frost on the ground is definitely hygge. Going on a winter walk while all wrapped up and having a catch up with a good friend is ‘hygge plus’.
Hygge your social life
Speaking of friends, a big part of the hygge concept is spending time with people you love. Why not invite a group of your nearest and dearest round for a healthy cooking party. Slaving away on your own in the kitchen while your guests wait at the table is not hygge, but sharing the work and having fun together preparing the food is! Why not have a look at our healthy CWP-friendly recipes so you can enjoy time with friends, cook a hearty and warming meal, and still stay on Plan!
