Being rushed to Accident & Emergency in the middle of the night was the wake-up call for Robert Whittington needed to make him sit up and take action about his weight for his family’s sake.
Robert, 40, who is married to Donna and has a five-year-old daughter, Imogen, celebrated losing six stone on Cambridge Weight Plan with a glamorous, all expenses paid photo shoot in London.
Here, traffic officer Robert, who was shortlisted for our Family Spirit Slimmer of the Year Award, talks about his journey to becoming fit for his 40s…
“In 2011, my wife and I were expecting our first child. I’d slowly piled on weight over the years but was motivated to be a leaner, keener and fitter daddy for her to play with. I lost a few stone.
“But after my daughter was born, my wife became very ill. This drew on over the months and was particularly stressful and worrying. Dealing with her new disability, caring for our baby and also having been made redundant, I found too many excuses not to diet.
“By September 2015 things were more settled but the scales said 21 stone. I went to bed on September 27th feeling rubbish.
“About midnight discomfort turned to pain, right in the middle of my chest. I tried to settle, kept tossing and turning, then started sweating.
“At 2am my wife realised all was not well and suggested I call the NHS helpline. Within a few minutes of telling them my age and that I had pains in my chest, they told me to expect an ambulance!
“I’m a traffic officer and normally the one requesting ambulances. The next thing I had a paramedic, who I’d worked with the previous week, wiring me up to an ECG.
“Then I was in A&E for the longest night of my life. Eight hours worrying about every possible outcome and the impact it would have on my family.
“I decided that night that by my 40th birthday in March I would give my family the biggest gift . . . ME. Fit not flabby and 40.
“Knowing Cambridge Weight Plan from a few friends who had done it, I trawled though the website and found a local Consultant.
“A week later I met Debbie Filla, who explained the process, the Steps and the products and helped make sense of it.
“Even with all the motivation I still was doubting if I’d make two stone, let alone six, but go hard or go home, right?
“I started on Milk Option Red 2* as my BMI was 44. When my BMI dropped below 40, I started Step 2.
“Starting was hard, the body craves sugar and it was about four days of grind. Thereafter I got my rhythm and my head in the game.
“Results came fast . . . 8lbs in week 1. Soon it was clear CWP could work for me.
“Two months in and I hit that magic two stone loss, the point where loved ones noticed slight changes, and I had to find a new hole in my belt. Month by month I chipped away those stones and six months later I did it and reached my six stone goal.
“I found long-lost passions like kayaking. I’ve now bought a boat and loving getting into paddling again.
“But the biggest thrill of all is the pride in my wife and daughter’s faces. I know I have done something massive for our future.
“My wife will struggle with her condition, but now I know I am going to be that rock she needs. My daughter now has a leaner, fitter and arguably more fun daddy to play with.”
