“My weight problems really started during my pregnancy. My son Oliver was born prematurely at 27 weeks and spent 3 months in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). My pregnancy had been very difficult and his birth by emergency C-section was a shock and very stressful. Oliver’s stay in NICU took a huge emotional toll on me. I didn’t have time think about myself and nor did I care; my focus was entirely on my son. Luckily Oliver battled through and was fine but then I was faced with more issues…
“When Oliver was one my relationship with his father broke down. Facing the end of my marriage was also extremely stressful and my weight continued to increase. Two 2 years later my parents passed away. My younger sister was only 15 and lived in Poland. I had to become her legal guardian and move her to the UK. Looking after my sister and dealing with my own grief, meant that I was turning to comfort eating more than ever.
“My main turning point was when my son asked me if I was pregnant because I had a “big tummy”. When I told him no he asked why I was bigger than other mums. I remembered being faced with this same situation when I was a child as my mum was bigger than other mums. I didn’t want my son to face any negativity because of me.
“I remembered my teenage years when other mums looked pretty and wore nice clothes and my own mum would just shut herself away in the house. I didn’t want to become like that and promised myself that I would become that pretty mum in nice clothes for him. I realised I couldn’t continue gaining weight as it was beginning to affect my day to day life too, and so I found Cambridge Weight Plan.
I’m so proud of you mummy, I can put my arms around you to give you a hug
“Since losing weight my life has completely changed, I had the confidence to change my career, we now have better family time as I have the energy to go for bike rides, active holidays and theme parks – I would never fit on rides before!
“The benefits of losing weight have been seen in all aspects of my life but the icing on the cake was when my son said ”I can put my arms around you to give you a hug now!”. It feels so good to finally be a mum my son can be proud of.
I won the Woman of the Year award in 2014 and was awarded with a trip of a lifetime to New York. I have maintained my weight loss for 2 years now!”
