Karen:

“We both work for the NHS within the community, and although we had a good friendship before we joined Cambridge Weight Plan, completing this journey together has made us lifelong best friends.

It all began when Claire sent me one of her texts saying she was feeling really low about her weight, but there was something different about this text, I could tell that this time she seriously wanted to do something about it! I was really embarrassed about my weight and was nervous about facing how bad things had really become, but knowing I had Claire’s support meant I felt strong enough, I knew I was ready to tackle my weight too.

As we both work as healthcare professionals, we often had to give advice to patients about losing weight and how to live healthy lifestyles, but we felt like frauds, how would anyone take us seriously about giving weight-loss advice when we were so both overweight?”

“So, we went to see our local Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant as a duo. We remember our first appointment with our Consultant. Karen was so nervous, she could barely bring herself to walk into our Consultant’s home. When we stood on the scales it was a real shock, we were the heaviest we had ever been, but also more determined than ever to succeed.

We carried on, always attending our appointments together every step of the way. Every Monday we would go to get weighed and then go out for a 400 calorie dinner and a diet coke. Monday became our favourite night of the week, we always looked forward to spending that time together, rather than dreading our weigh-ins. We’ve had highs, lows, tears and laughter, but throughout this journey we’ve always been side by side.

Every night we’d share our food journal for the day, giving each other meal ideas and tips (Karen always had really creative dinner ideas), and we always sent each other words of encouragement each morning to help the other get through the day. When we were struggling with temptation we’d meet up and distract each other, doing something nice like going for a long walk or a coffee, always ending with us both having had a really good laugh.

One Monday evening after our weigh-in, our Consultant sent us every picture she had taken throughout our journey. We were totally blown away with our own transformation – first shocked, then laughing, then we started crying uncontrollably. We felt great, our confidence was soaring and we knew our friendship was stronger than ever too, were each other’s rocks.

We couldn’t have done it without each other or our amazing Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant.”
